Ham and Swiss on Sourdough

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of sourdough bread
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced ham
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • Dijon mustard or mayonnaise (optional)
  • Butter or margarine, softened

Instructions:

  1. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Lay out the slices of sourdough bread.
  3. If desired, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard or mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Layer the Swiss cheese on one side of each slice of bread.
  5. Divide the thinly sliced ham equally among four slices of bread, placing it on top of the Swiss cheese.
  6. Top each sandwich with the other slice of sourdough bread, cheese side down, to form four sandwiches.
  7. Spread a thin layer of softened butter or margarine on the outer sides of each sandwich.
  8. Place the sandwiches on the preheated skillet or griddle. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread turns golden brown and the cheese melts.
  9. Once the sandwiches are done, remove them from the skillet or griddle.
  10. Cut each sandwich diagonally or in half if preferred, and serve them warm.
