EPO test

A test of the hormone EPO (erythropoietin) level in the blood.

Testing EPO blood levels may be of value in:

  • evaluating anemia (low red blood cell count).
  • or polycythemia (high red blood cell count).
  • Too little EPO might be responsible for too few red blood cells (anemia).
  • Too much EPO might cause too many red blood cells (polycythemia).
