Nitrogen fixation

Reduction of N2 to ammonia by prokaryotes such as Rhizobium in legume nodules, Azotobacter and some cyanobacteria. Nitrogenase is oxygen-sensitive.

Plants do not fix N2 themselves; they host microbes or take up nitrate/ammonium.
