Water back on the land
Many wetlands were drained via ditches, tiles, or levees for agriculture. Hydrologic restoration reconnects water to former wetland footprints — vegetation often follows if seed sources remain.
Techniques
- Plug drainage ditches — restore sheet flow and pooling.
- Remove tile drains — where feasible without flooding unintended areas.
- Adjust levee breaches — controlled inundation in managed wetlands.
- Beaver dam analogs — mimic natural water retention in streams.
Engineering cautions
Upstream/downstream property rights, flood risk to neighbors, and sediment load during construction require hydrologic modeling and permits.
Vegetation recovery timeline
Colonization by wetland species may take 3–10 years. Planting accelerates recovery on sites lacking propagules.
