Gradient from stream to upland
Riparian zones exhibit zonation parallel to watercourses. Energy input from floods, nutrient enrichment, and moisture gradients create distinct plant bands.
Typical zones
- Stream edge — emergent aquatics, willows, sedges tolerant of scour.
- Lower bank — shrubs and young trees; frequent disturbance.
- Upper bank / terrace — mature riparian forest when stable.
- Transition to upland — mesic species decreasing in flood tolerance.
Functional roles
Roots stabilize banks, filter nutrients, shade water to reduce temperature for aquatic fauna, and provide wildlife corridors. Width of functional riparian buffer depends on slope, soil, and land use upslope.
