Monitoring Ecological Restoration Success

Defining and measuring success

Restoration success criteria should be established before work begins — typically thresholds for native cover, species richness, invasive abundance, and structural attributes (canopy height, tree density).

Monitoring design

Permanent plots surveyed at years 1, 3, 5, 10+. Photopoints from fixed stakes document visual change. Wildlife surveys extend botanical metrics to functional recovery.

Adaptive management

If invasives exceed threshold by year 3, escalate control. If planted trees fail, investigate provenance, herbivory, or hydrology rather than repeating same planting.

Reporting standards

International principles (SER) emphasize ecological, social, and sustainability dimensions. Publish results — failed projects teach as much as successes when data are shared.
