Grass as managed ecosystem
Turf covers vast urban area — parks, sports fields, home lawns. Sustainable management reduces water, fertilizer, and pesticide inputs while maintaining function.
Species and cultivar choice
- Cool-season (Kentucky bluegrass, fescues) — peak growth spring/fall.
- Warm-season (bermudagrass, zoysiagrass) — drought tolerant; brown in winter in cool climates.
- Fine fescues — low input shade lawns with reduced mowing.
Mowing height and frequency
Taller grass shades soil, reduces weed germination, and deepens roots. Never remove more than one-third of leaf blade per mow. Sharp blades prevent ragged tips that lose water faster.
Input reduction
Soil test before fertilizing. Irrigate deeply and infrequently to encourage root depth. Accept clover and diversity in low-traffic areas — monoculture perfection is resource-intensive.
