Trees integrated with crops and livestock
Agroforestry deliberately combines woody perennials with agricultural or pastoral production on the same land unit. Benefits include wind protection, diversified revenue, and carbon storage.
System types
- Silvopasture — trees + forage + grazing animals.
- Alley cropping — tree rows with annual crops in alleys.
- Forest farming — cultivating shade-tolerant crops (mushrooms, ginseng) under canopy.
- Riparian buffers — trees along waterways filtering nutrients and stabilizing banks.
Design considerations
Tree spacing, species shade tolerance of intercrops, and livestock exclusion during sensitive periods. Long rotation trees require patience — interim income from annual crops or grazing bridges cash flow.
Policy and certification
Some programs incentivize agroforestry for climate mitigation. Third-party certification (FSC) may apply to timber component while crops follow separate standards.
