Nursery Production and Transplant Readiness

From seedling to field-ready plant

Nursery production bridges germination and mature cropping. Transplant shock — wilting and growth pause after planting — occurs when seedlings are not physiologically prepared for field stress.

Hardening off protocol

  • Gradually reduce irrigation frequency over 5–7 days.
  • Increase light exposure and lower night temperatures.
  • Apply mild nutrient stress to thicken cell walls.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen that produces soft, succulent tissue.

Root system quality

Seedlings should have white, actively growing root tips without circling at container edges. Root-bound plants recover slowly. Trimming or using deeper cells encourages vertical root development.

Scheduling and logistics

Production calendars align transplant date with market window and frost-free dates. Label every batch with sowing date, variety, and treatment history. Uniformity at transplant reduces management complexity in the field or greenhouse bay.
