Caramelized Onion Gruyere Rolls

Ingredients:

For the caramelized onions:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the rolls:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed according to package instructions
  • 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese
  • Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water)

Instructions:

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and caramelized, about 25-30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Once done, set aside to cool.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet into a rectangle.
  4. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the entire surface of the puff pastry sheet.
  5. Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese over the caramelized onions, covering the entire sheet.
  6. Starting from one long edge, tightly roll up the puff pastry sheet into a log.
  7. Use a sharp knife to slice the log into approximately 1-inch thick rolls.
  8. Place the rolls on the prepared baking sheet, cut-side down, leaving some space between each roll.
  9. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash using a pastry brush. This will give them a nice golden color when baked.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the rolls are puffed and golden brown.
  11. Once done, remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

These caramelized onion Gruyere rolls are flavorful, savory, and make a fantastic appetizer or side dish for any occasion. Enjoy the delicious combination of sweet caramelized onions and nutty Gruyere cheese in every bite!
