Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef (preferably grass-fed for richer flavor)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns (potato buns or brioche buns work well)
- 4 slices of cheddar cheese or your choice of cheese
- Toppings: sliced tomatoes, lettuce, red onion rings, pickles, mustard, ketchup, and mayonnaise
Optional Ingredients for Special Sauce:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Dash of Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat your grill or stovetop skillet to medium-high heat.
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently form them into patties, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper.
- Place the burger patties on the grill or skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side without pressing down.
- Flip the patties and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, add a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
- While the burgers are cooking, lightly toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in a toaster.
- If making a special sauce, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, sugar, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Once the burgers are cooked to your liking and the cheese has melted, remove them from the heat and let them rest for a minute.
- Assemble your heritage-style burgers: Spread the special sauce (if using) on the bottom half of each bun. Place the cooked patties on top of the sauce. Add sliced tomatoes, lettuce, red onion rings, and pickles. Optionally, add ketchup, mustard, or additional mayo on the top bun.
- Top with the other half of the bun and serve your heritage-style homemade burgers immediately. Enjoy the nostalgic taste of a classic burger!
Feel free to adjust the toppings and sauce according to your preferences to create your ideal heritage-style burger.
